Bach Ma temple
This temple is situated in Ha Khau, Huu Tuc, Tho Xuong district, Hoai Duc town (now 76 Hang Buom street, Hoan Kiem district, Ha Noi). It has a worship of Long Do, ie White Horse Saint, under whose actions, Thang Long is protected. From what the documents in 14th century has told, White Horse Saint himself has warned Cao Bien, a Chinese civil servant, who came here as invader in the time from 866 to 875.
That warning frightened him and made him build a temple right away. As other legend has said, when King Ly Cong Uan stabilised his capital in Thang Long in 1010, there was some collapsion happened to the rampart, then he arrived here to say some prayer and amazingly, one morning, a white horse running from this temple was seen. It ran around the area where people was building rampart. Everywhere it was, it left a step. After that, that horse came back to the temple and vanished. That was such a miracle that King Ly had to base on the horse’s remained steps to build his rampart and there was not any collapsion any more. Next, he coferred Long Do on Thang Long protector God. From then on, this God had another name, Bach Ma.
The temple has been fixed for many times. In 1781, King Trinh let his residents in Mat Thai, Bac Thuong, Bac Ha purchase some gifts. In 1829, the temple is repaired and become one of the most luxurious in Ha Noi. In 1839, literature board was put up on the temple’s left side, Phuong dinh was also built to become the place for worship weekly. Some valuable things are still preserved in this temple, such as literature board, worship tools like swords, chains, sabers, long-handled spear, etc.
Annually, the temple festival takes place in 2nd month of lunar calendar. Long ago, there was a celebrity called buffello beating for spring welcome.
